We are eager to help and willing to receive. We truly seek to serve one another and are able to ask for help as well. We neither shrink from work not do we allow ourselves to be overcommitted.
We hear with our hearts and speak the truth in love. We listen without interruption. Our advice is consistently positive and constructive.
We are faithful to one another. We stand together in bad times as well as good. We honor confidences. We neither gossip nor speak ill nor will we countenance it from others.
We are honest. Our fellowship is marked by openness and transparency. We are free to express our emotions and refuse to harbor anger or anxiety.
We accept each other as God’s work in progress. We are grateful for God’s grace revealed in each other and patient with imperfection. We rejoice in the uniqueness of each person and do not demand conformity of taste or opinion.
We are encouragers and full of praise. We look for things to like about each other and praise one another both in public and private. We are sincerely thankful that God has brought us together. We delight in every talent and rejoice in every success.
We respect the right to privacy of thought and feeling. We do not invade one another nor pressure for disclosure and confession. We can be alone together with God.
We are the body of Christ. We are equal members under his headship. We have no room for envy or ostentation; for feeling superior or inferior.
We are willing to risk. We trust in God’s power and his care. We are not afraid of rejection or hurt. We can be vulnerable. We can love without reservation.
We believe in the intrinsic goodness of God’s people. We trust each other for love, protection and to do what is right.
This church belongs exclusively to God. It does not exist for any other person or group. It bears the name “Christian” because Christ is the sole owner.
Because Christ is the rightful owner of his church, we will trust him to take care of it. It is essentially his business whether we exist or not. Our business is to trust him and to work with all the strength he provides at the task he has set before us.
Because the church is family, we will be completely open about the needs and obligations of the church, but we will not attempt to usurp God’s leading of his people by conducting high pressure fund drives or by threatening, nagging or begging.
Because we know that God’s people sacrifice to support the kingdom, we will always prayerfully seek to be good stewards – conservative, faithful, generous and wise.
Because giving to God is an act of worship, we treat giving as holy and desire only gifts cheerfully given.
Because Christ has chosen to trust the safety and well-being of the flock to faithful shepherds, we also entrust our gifts to their care. We recognize that God may lead one to give a special gift, but we discourage gifts with “strings attached”. We rely on the spiritual wisdom of the eldership.
Because we agree that those who preach the gospel should receive their living from the gospel (1 Corinthians 9:27) and desire to share all good things with those who instruct us in the word (Galatians 6:6), we seek to provide compensation commensurate with the high calling to preach and teach. We expect those called to serve at Valley Christian to be fully possessed by Jesus Christ, entirely committed to his church and free from the love of money.
